CUID open debates are informal discussion groups which meet every other Thursday at the Cafe Project on Jesus Lane to talk about development issues. They are quite small scale and participants are encouraged to share their views with the rest of the group. A small amount of prior knowledge is usually required, but only a small amount! Joe believes that industrial and foreign trade and investment policy are inseparable and critically important. In this session he will mention the experiences of East Asia with regards to industrial and foreign policy, particularly scrutinising the 'liberal' thinking on these issues. He will highlight policy differences between North-East Asia, South-East Asia and China as a means to illuminate global policy variation.

Planting Promise - sustainable development through linking agriculture and education. "Planting Promise" is a Cambridge initiative for self-sustaining, locally led development through education, enterprise and agriculture. In Sierra Leone, the world's poorest country, supporting projects that focus on the possibilities for development from and for the country itself is the way to generate real change and hope. We have opened a primary school bringing invigoration and education to hundreds of people, and we need to raise funds for it until the first harvest of crops we encouraged locals to plant. Come along for lunch from 12-2pm on Monday 17th November for good food, information on how you can make a real impact, and to help us raise funds and awareness.

Welfare Wednesdays @ the Cafe Project This year, CUSU Welfare wants to start tackling some of the taboo subjects that Welfare Campaigns deal with: ‘Why are we living through a sexual health epidemic in this country?’, ‘How can we promote positive body image and tackle eating disorders?’, ‘How does student depression affect studies?’. To truly tackle these issues we need to start understanding them from the grass roots. Every week, CUSU Welfare will be posing controversial questions to do with a range of issues and invite you to come and discuss them with us. The cafe project is hosting it: helping us bring together students and the local community and get to grips with welfare issues affecting our society today. For more information email welfare@cusu.cam.ac.uk or come along, Wednesdays from 5-6.30 during term time (15th October to 3rd December). Start: 19:00

Join the Hub and CUiD to watch "Favela Rising", a film which documents a man and a movement, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian squatter settlement) united. Haunted by the murders of his family and many of his friends, Anderson Sá is a former drug-trafficker who turns social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro’s most feared slum. Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies his community to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police. At the dawn of liberation, just as collective mobility is overcoming all odds and Anderson’s grassroots Afro Reggae movement is at the height of its success, a tragic accident threatens to silence the movement forever... Check out the trailer here: www.favelarising.com ABOUT WEDNESDAY HUB NIGHTS: Come along to Hub Nights at the Café Project (on Jesus Lane) every Wednesday during term-time, from 7pm till late! Join the Hub and Stop AIDS to watch "Dispatches: Living with AIDS", in which Sorious Samura documents a month spent working as an orderly in a hospital in Zambia, where the majority of the patients are HIV positive, and exposes the untold story of AIDS - how poverty and the complex nature of African culture and sexuality are hampering efforts to eradicate this horrifying disease. Come along to watch this powerful and thought-provoking documentary, then sign the Stop AIDS Campaign's current postcard petition, "Push for the Pool", calling for the creation of a patent pool to enable vital ARVs to be manufactured as generic drugs and sold to developing countries at affordable prices.
