Wednesday Hub Night with CUiD

19/11/2008 - 19:00
19/11/2008 - 23:00

Join the Hub and CUiD to watch "Favela Rising", a film which documents a man and a movement, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian squatter settlement) united. Haunted by the murders of his family and many of his friends, Anderson Sá is a former drug-trafficker who turns social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro’s most feared slum. Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies his community to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police. At the dawn of liberation, just as collective mobility is overcoming all odds and Anderson’s grassroots Afro Reggae movement is at the height of its success, a tragic accident threatens to silence the movement forever...

ABOUT WEDNESDAY HUB NIGHTS: Come along to Hub Nights at the Café Project (on Jesus Lane) every Wednesday during term-time, from 7pm till late! The evening starts with a short event, such as a film screening, organised by a different member group each week. This providesa regular focus for people interested in learning more about different social issues, from climate change to human rights to international development. Afterwards, the Café remains open so discussion can continue informally over tea, coffee and cake.
