Wednesday Hub Night with SSSK

12/11/2008 - 19:00
12/11/2008 - 23:00

The Hub and SSSK invite you to step outside the "Cambridge Bubble" for an evening, to watch the gripping and eye-opening documentary "Children Underground", a film following the lives of a group of street children in Romania. The film was nominated for an Oscar and has won numerous other awards. Afterwards you'll have a chance to make a difference as raffle tickets to win bottles of champagne will be on sale, with all proceeds going to SSSK. There will also be the chance to find out more about the work of SSSK and learn how you can get involved. Tea and cake provided by the Café Project all night.

ABOUT THE FILM: "Children Underground" reveals the horrendous effects of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu's regime - Ceausescu's decision to ban contraception and abortion as a way of increasing the country's work force resulted in a generation of children born into a nearly incomprehensible state of poverty and destitution. The documentary focuses on five of these abandoned kids who live in a Bucharest subway station. Cristina, the group's 16-year-old leader, shaves her head in order to pass as a male and avoid further sexual assaults. Mihai is an intelligent, charming 12-year-old who smokes cigarettes and dreams of a brighter future. 10-year-old runaway Ana, too young to take care of herself, guards over her innocent younger brother Marian. And, finally, there is Macarena, a dazed, disoriented 14-year-old who inhales paint and fantasises about a family that is waiting for her in a distant, nameless land.

ABOUT WEDNESDAY HUB NIGHTS: Come along to Hub Nights at the Café Project (on Jesus Lane) every Wednesday during term-time, from 7pm till late! The evening starts with a short event, such as a film screening, organised by a different member group each week. This provides a regular focus for people interested in learning more about different social issues, from climate change to human rights to international development. Afterwards, the Café remains open so discussion can continue informally over tea, coffee and cake.
