19/11/2008 - 19:00
19/11/2008 - 23:00

Join the Hub and CUiD to watch "Favela Rising", a film which documents a man and a movement, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian squatter settlement) united. Haunted by the murders of his family and many of his friends, Anderson Sá is a former drug-trafficker who turns social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro’s most feared slum. Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies his community to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police. At the dawn of liberation, just as collective mobility is overcoming all odds and Anderson’s grassroots Afro Reggae movement is at the height of its success, a tragic accident threatens to silence the movement forever...

Wednesday Hub Night with SSSK

12/11/2008 - 19:00
12/11/2008 - 23:00

The Hub and SSSK invite you to step outside the "Cambridge Bubble" for an evening, to watch the gripping and eye-opening documentary "Children Underground", a film following the lives of a group of street children in Romania. The film was nominated for an Oscar and has won numerous other awards. Afterwards you'll have a chance to make a difference as raffle tickets to win bottles of champagne will be on sale, with all proceeds going to SSSK. There will also be the chance to find out more about the work of SSSK and learn how you can get involved. Tea and cake provided by the Café Project all night.

ABOUT THE FILM: "Children Underground" reveals the horrendous effects of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu's regime - Ceausescu's decision to ban contraception and abortion as a way of increasing the country's work force resulted in a generation of children born into a nearly incomprehensible state of poverty and destitution. The documentary focuses on five of these abandoned kids who live in a Bucharest subway station. Cristina, the group's 16-year-old leader, shaves her head in order to pass as a male and avoid further sexual assaults. Mihai is an intelligent, charming 12-year-old who smokes cigarettes and dreams of a brighter future. 10-year-old runaway Ana, too young to take care of herself, guards over her innocent younger brother Marian. And, finally, there is Macarena, a dazed, disoriented 14-year-old who inhales paint and fantasises about a family that is waiting for her in a distant, nameless land.

Join the Hub and Stop AIDS to watch "Dispatches: Living with AIDS", in which Sorious Samura documents a month spent working as an orderly in a hospital in Zambia, where the majority of the patients are HIV positive, and exposes the untold story of AIDS - how poverty and the complex nature of African culture and sexuality are hampering efforts to eradicate this horrifying disease.

Come along to watch this powerful and thought-provoking documentary, then sign the Stop AIDS Campaign's current postcard petition, "Push for the Pool", calling for the creation of a patent pool to enable vital ARVs to be manufactured as generic drugs and sold to developing countries at affordable prices.
