Planting Promise Lunch

17/11/2008 - 12:00
17/11/2008 - 14:00

Planting Promise - sustainable development through linking agriculture and education.

"Planting Promise" is a Cambridge initiative for self-sustaining, locally led development through education, enterprise and agriculture. In Sierra Leone, the world's poorest country, supporting projects that focus on the possibilities for development from and for the country itself is the way to generate real change and hope. We have opened a primary school bringing invigoration and education to hundreds of people, and we need to raise funds for it until the first harvest of crops we encouraged locals to plant. Come along for lunch from 12-2pm on Monday 17th November for good food, information on how you can make a real impact, and to help us raise funds and awareness.

Make Do & Mend

25/10/2008 - 12:00
25/10/2008 - 17:00

The Shop  - http://www.theshopjesuslane.co.uk/ - a few doors down from us at no. 18 are running 'Make Do and Mend' from 12 noon till 4 pm - "This event will showcase subversive glamour: guests are invited to bring unwanted clothing that they can swap for something new and more covetable. The ‘Stitch Up’ girls will attend the event to help customise and decorate the clothing. In addition, fashion and accessories designed by local makers will be on sale. Entrance 50p."

And hopefully (providing we find volunteers at this short notice - my bad for leaving it so late) we'll be open for that time and a bit later (or whenever we can mange) to provide refreshments and a place to chat for participants, plus anyone else who comes in.

Should be good :-).

FOUND Magazine's By The Time I Get To Europe Tour "2008!"

18/10/2008 - 19:30
18/10/2008 - 23:00

FOUND magazine is a American-based collection of FOUND items that have been sent
in by readers around the world; love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework,
to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles -
anything that gives a glimpse into someone else's life. Anything goes...

After 7 years of sharing magical finds in hundreds of North American cities,
FOUND Magazine's Davy and Peter Rothbart take their rowdy, exhilarating
reading-and-music extravaganza across Europe for the first time ever!! Davy
delivers hilarious and heartbreaking FOUND notes and letters; Peter performs
dazzling songs based on finds sent in by readers. The L.A. Times calls Davy and
Peter Rothbart "utterly engaging performers," and the Boston Globe calls the
show "a powerful fix for thinking voyeurs."

Calling all nations with Davy and Peter: the death-defying 19-year-old
sword-swallowing prodigy Brett Loudermilk, and legendary Los Angeles
underground D.J. Andrew Cohn.  Bring your friends and your own favorite finds to
share!

www.foundmagazine.com

The Cafe will be open from 7.30 but the show will start at 8, and we might be open afterwards as well depending on when it finishes....

This event is free and open to attend (as are all evening Cafe events) but obviously the tour is costing FOUND lots of money so please buy lots of magazines / donate what you can if you enjoy the show.

Taking Liberties film showing

12/10/2008 - 19:30
12/10/2008 - 22:30

Cambridge No to ID campaign (www.no2id.net) will be showing the film 'taking liberties' in the Cafe from 8pm. The cafe will be open from 7.30, to give people a chance to buy their film snacks and tea...

"TAKING LIBERTIES is a shocking but hilarious polemic documentary that charts the destruction of all your Basic Liberties under 10 Years of New Labour. Released to coincide with Tony Blair's departure, the film and the book follow the stories of normal people who's lives have been turned upside down by injustice - from being arrested for holding a placard outside parliament to being tortured in Guantanamo Bay." - http://www.noliberties.com/

As the people showing the film will be there, we only need one volunteer to serve drinks. And watch the film! So sign up...

CUID Open Debate 2: 'Legacies'

30/10/2008 - 19:30
30/10/2008 - 23:00

CUID open debates are informal discussion groups which meet every other Thursday at the Cafe Project on Jesus Lane to talk about development issues. They are quite small scale and participants are encouraged to share their views with the rest of the group. A small amount of prior knowledge is usually required, but only a small amount!

In this session Joe will talk somewhat generally about 'initial conditions' in a society, but mainly will stick to two topics - land reform and sociological legacies. Land reform is very relevant due to the critical role it played in Asian success stories. Joe will also touch upon land reform in Latin America and Africa. Sociological legacies will include colonialism, communism and historical cultural factors. Joe will mention why he thinks that 'dependencies' are real but can be overcome.

CUID Open Debate 4: 'Financial organisation'

27/11/2008 - 19:30
27/11/2008 - 23:00

They are quite small scale and participants are encouraged to share their views with the rest of the group. A small amount of prior knowledge is usually required, but only a small amount!

Financial organisation comes down to how to generate and then channel money in an emerging economy. In this session Joe will suggest that there are things you have to do in an emerging economy that would be very hard to defend in a more developed economy.

CUID Open Debate 1: 'An Attempt to Think Clearly About Development'

16/10/2008 - 19:30
16/10/2008 - 23:00

CUID open debates are informal discussion groups which meet every other Thursday at the Cafe Project on Jesus Lane to talk about development issues. They are quite small scale and participants are encouraged to share their views with the rest of the group. A small amount of prior knowledge is usually required, but this first session is an introduction.

In this first session our open debate leader, Joe Studwell, will talk about what he thinks are the most important contributing factors in developmental success and why his expertise in Asia has led him to this conclusion. This first discussion sets the scene for the series and invites those attending to challenge Joe's 'big picture', suggest alternatives and pose questions to be addressed during the series.

CUID Open Debate 3: 'Industrial and foreign trade policy'

13/11/2008 - 19:30
13/11/2008 - 23:00

They are quite small scale and participants are encouraged to share their views with the rest of the group. A small amount of prior knowledge is usually required, but only a small amount!

Joe believes that industrial and foreign trade and investment policy are inseparable and critically important. In this session he will mention the experiences of East Asia with regards to industrial and foreign policy, particularly scrutinising the 'liberal' thinking on these issues. He will highlight policy differences between North-East Asia, South-East Asia and China as a means to illuminate global policy variation.

Freshers' Fair

08/10/2008 - 09:00
08/10/2008 - 16:00

The Cambridge University Freshers' Fair is the best opportunity of the year for the Cafe Project to advertise its existance to the student population, and to recruit a whole load of volunteers!  We need a couple of volunteers at a time to stand behind our stall at the freshers fair in kelsey kerridge sports centre for the two days of the fair, giving out Cafe Project flyers and termcards, and collecting email addresses of freshers who sign down to our mailing list.  It would be good if plenty of us signed up to do this - so no-one has to spend hours and hours at the stall.  The slots have been put down as 'waiter' jobs, but really it's publicising at the fair.

Welfare Wednesdays

19/11/2008 - 17:00
19/11/2008 - 18:30

Welfare Wednesdays @ the Cafe Project

This year, CUSU Welfare wants to start tackling some of the taboo subjects that Welfare Campaigns deal with: ‘Why are we living through a sexual health epidemic in this country?’, ‘How can we promote positive body image and tackle eating disorders?’, ‘How does student depression affect studies?’.  To truly tackle these issues we need to start understanding them from the grass roots.  Every week, CUSU Welfare will be posing controversial questions to do with a range of issues and invite you to come and discuss them with us.  The cafe project is hosting it: helping us bring together students and the local community and get to grips with welfare issues affecting our society today.  For more information email welfare@cusu.cam.ac.uk or come along, Wednesdays from 5-6.30 during term time (15th October to 3rd December).
